The F-106 Delta Dart, which became operational in 1959, was a supersonic all-weather interceptor developed for the United States Air Force as part of its Cold War air defence network. It could reach a top speed of Mach 2.3, about 2,455 km/h at high altitude, making it one of the fastest single-engine jets of its era. The F-106 featured a delta wing and the Hughes MA-1 integrated fire control system, which worked with ground-based SAGE radar to automatically guide the aircraft, detect and track targets, and control missile engagements.

The Delta Dart carried its weapons in an internal bay, including AIM-4 Falcon missiles and an AIR-2 Genie nuclear rocket, designed to destroy incoming bomber formations before they could reach North America. Although it never saw combat, the F-106 served as the USAF’s primary interceptor through the 1960s and into the 1970s, maintaining constant alert during the height of the Cold War. Known as “The Six,” it earned a reputation among pilots for exceptional speed and high-altitude performance once early issues were resolved.
