The EA-18G Growler is a carrier-based airborne electronic attack aircraft developed by Boeing from the two-seat F/A-18F Super Hornet. Built to replace the EA-6B Prowler, the Growler gives the U.S. Navy a modern platform for radar jamming, communications disruption, electronic surveillance and suppression of enemy air defences.

The first Growler test aircraft went into production in October 2004 and made its first flight in Aug 2006. The first production aircraft was delivered to VAQ-129 at NAS Whidbey Island on Jun 3ʳᵈ, 2008, and the type reached initial operational capability in Sep 2009. Although it shares much of its airframe, engines and carrier suitability with the Super Hornet, the Growler is built around electronic warfare rather than traditional fighter attack missions.

Its key systems include the ALQ-218 receiver, ALQ-99 jamming pods, communications countermeasures, satellite communications and APG-79 AESA radar. The aircraft can also carry AGM-88 HARM anti-radiation missiles and AIM-120 air-to-air missiles, allowing it to defend itself and attack hostile radar systems while supporting strike packages.

The Growler made its combat debut during Operation Odyssey Dawn over Libya in 2011 and has since become the U.S. Navy’s main electronic attack aircraft. Its role is to detect, deny, deceive and disrupt enemy radars, communications and networks, helping protect friendly aircraft and support strike, air superiority and maritime operations.

The EA-18G is operated by the U.S. Navy and the Royal Australian Air Force. Australia’s Growlers are operated by No. 6 Squadron at RAAF Base Amberley and provide a complementary capability alongside the F/A-18F Super Hornet and F-35A Lightning II.
