The Canberra was a British first-generation jet-powered medium bomber designed by W. E. W. Petter for English Electric. First flown on 13 May 1949 and entering Royal Air Force service in 1951, the Canberra combined high speed, long range, and exceptional high-altitude performance, allowing it to outfly many contemporary fighters during the early jet age. Powered by twin Rolls-Royce Avon turbojet engines, it served in bomber, reconnaissance, electronic warfare, and training roles throughout the Cold War. The Canberra saw operational service in conflicts including the Malayan Emergency, Suez Crisis, Vietnam War, and Falklands War, while the American licence-built Martin B-57 Canberra became an important USAF combat aircraft in Vietnam.

More than 1,350 aircraft were built in Britain, the United States, and Australia, including 48 Australian-built examples produced by the Government Aircraft Factories for the Royal Australian Air Force. The Canberra served with over 15 nations and remained in frontline and specialist reconnaissance service for more than 50 years, with the RAF’s final Canberra PR.9 aircraft retiring in 2006. It remains one of the most successful and long-lived jet bombers of the Cold War era.
