The C-47 Skytrain — known as the Dakota in British and Commonwealth service—is one of the most iconic and widely used military transport aircraft in history. Developed from the civilian DC-3 airliner, the C-47 was adapted for rugged military operations with a reinforced floor, large cargo doors, and upgraded systems. It entered U.S. Army Air Forces service in 1941 and quickly became indispensable in World War II.

Renowned for its reliability, range, and versatility, the C-47 could carry up to 28 troops, 6,000 lbs of cargo, or tow gliders into combat zones. It played a critical role in major operations such as the D-Day airborne assault, Burma supply runs over "The Hump", and Operation Market Garden. Its ability to operate from unimproved airstrips made it vital for both front-line resupply and evacuation missions.

Over 10,000 C-47s were built, with numerous variants:

C-53 Skytrooper: Dedicated troop transport without cargo doors.

AC-47 “Spooky”: A gunship variant armed with side-firing miniguns, used extensively in Vietnam for close air support.

R4D: U.S. Navy and Marine Corps designation.

Lisunov Li-2: A Soviet-licensed version built under license in large numbers.

Basler BT-67: A modern turboprop upgrade still flying today for utility and scientific missions.

The C-47 remained in frontline U.S. military service into the 1970s and was flown by allied forces for decades beyond. Its unmatched longevity, global reach, and wartime legacy cement the Skytrain as one of the greatest military transports ever built.

Why are the stripes vertical?
Great question - and you're absolutely right that the U.S. flag is usually displayed with horizontal stripes. But in this design, we’ve reimagined the flag as an artistic tribute rather than a literal representation. We chose to depict the flag as if it were hanging vertically from above, similar to how it might appear draped at a hangar entrance or suspended during a ceremony.  This vertical orientation allows the iconic silhouette of the aircraft to really shine -with the red and white stripes running the length of the fuselage, it creates a bold, centred look while still honouring the flag’s spirit and symbolism.

Flex fit , embroidered lettering and good shipping time. That's all you need from a hat and I Love Hangar delivered!
