The C-47 Skytrain (also known as the Dakota in British and Commonwealth service) was the military version of the civilian DC-3 airliner. First flown in December 1941 for military use, it became one of the most important and versatile aircraft of World War II. Rugged, reliable, and easy to maintain, the C-47 served in nearly every theatre and with numerous Allied air forces.

Powered by two Pratt & Whitney R-1830 radial engines, the C-47 could carry 28 troops, 6,000 lbs of cargo, or evacuate wounded personnel. It played key roles in airborne operations, notably in the D-Day Normandy landings, Operation Market Garden, Burma resupply missions, and the China–Burma–India “Hump” flights.

More than 10,000 C-47s were built, and they continued in service long after the war — including in the Berlin Airlift and Vietnam War. Many were converted into gunships (AC-47 “Spooky”) or civilian transports postwar.

A large number of C-47s survive today, with dozens still flying. The type remains a beloved symbol of Allied airlift capability.

Why are the stripes vertical?
Great question - and you're absolutely right that the U.S. flag is usually displayed with horizontal stripes. But in this design, we’ve reimagined the flag as an artistic tribute rather than a literal representation. We chose to depict the flag as if it were hanging vertically from above, similar to how it might appear draped at a hangar entrance or suspended during a ceremony. This vertical orientation allows the iconic silhouette of the aircraft to really shine - with the red and white stripes running the length of the fuselage, it creates a bold, centred look while still honouring the flag’s spirit and symbolism.
Comfortable nice material
