The Boeing C-17 Globemaster III is a four-engine heavy transport aircraft developed by McDonnell Douglas, later acquired by Boeing, for the United States Air Force. Designed to combine long-range strategic airlift with the ability to operate from short and austere runways, the C-17 can transport troops, armoured vehicles, helicopters, oversized cargo and humanitarian supplies directly into operational areas. The first production aircraft was delivered to the USAF in 1993, and the first operational squadron became ready in 1995.

Powered by four Pratt & Whitney F117-PW-100 turbofan engines, the C-17 can carry a maximum payload of approximately 77.5 tonnes. With a payload of about 75 tonnes, it has an unrefuelled range of roughly 2,400 nautical miles, while considerably longer distances are possible with lighter loads or aerial refuelling. Its thrust reversers, high-lift wing and strong landing gear allow it to use comparatively short runways and reverse under its own power while on the ground.

The C-17 has supported military deployments, airborne operations, aeromedical evacuation, disaster relief and humanitarian missions around the world. It can carry vehicles and equipment that are too large for many other tactical transports while also delivering cargo and paratroopers directly into forward operating areas.

Boeing delivered 275 production C-17As between 1993 and 2015, including 222 to the United States Air Force and 53 to international customers. Four earlier development aircraft bring the total number of C-17 airframes built to 279. International operators include Australia, Canada, India, Kuwait, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates and the United Kingdom, while a multinational fleet supports members of NATO’s Strategic Airlift Capability programme. Its combination of payload, range and short-field performance has made the C-17 one of the most important military transport aircraft of the modern era.
