The Hercules served extensively in operations including the Falklands War, Gulf War, Iraq War, and the War in Afghanistan, as well as numerous humanitarian and evacuation missions worldwide. The aircraft became closely associated with low-level tactical flying and special forces support, particularly through No. 47 Squadron RAF. RAF Hercules aircraft operated for many years from RAF Lyneham before the fleet moved to RAF Brize Norton in 2011. The RAF retired its final Hercules aircraft on Fri 30ᵗʰ Jun, 2023, ending one of the longest continuous operational aircraft careers in modern Royal Air Force history.
