Bomber Command (Crew Transport) Gift Card - Blank inside

$3.99 USD

Before an operation, RAF Bomber Command crews were transported from the station buildings to their aircraft, which were parked at dispersal points around the airfield. These could be more than a kilometre from the crew rooms, making buses and other crew transport an important part of the nightly routine.

After briefing, crews collected their flying kit, parachutes and equipment before waiting for transport to take them out to their aircraft. The vehicles were often driven by members of the Women’s Auxiliary Air Force (WAAF), who carried crews to their waiting Lancasters, Halifaxes and other bombers.

For the aircrew, the journey to dispersal was one of the final stages before an operation. Veterans recalled a mixture of conversation, nervous humour and silence as they contemplated the night ahead.

After returning from an operation, crews were collected from the dispersal areas and taken back to the station for debriefing and the other routines that followed an operational sortie.
