Bomber Command Crew (Pilot) Gift Card - Blank inside

$3.99 USD

The Pilot was the leader of an RAF Bomber Command crew during the Second World War and was responsible for flying the aircraft throughout the operation. In normal Bomber Command practice, the pilot also served as captain of the aircraft, responsible for the conduct of the sortie and the safety of his crew.

In heavy bombers such as the Lancaster, Halifax and Stirling, the Pilot worked closely with every member of the crew. The Flight Engineer assisted with engines and aircraft systems, the Navigator supplied headings and timing corrections, and the Bomb Aimer directed the final approach to the target. If enemy fighters attacked, the Pilot carried out evasive manoeuvres such as the corkscrew in response to warnings from the gunners.

Many Bomber Command pilots were only in their early twenties, serving in a force whose aircrew averaged about 22 years of age. A standard operational tour was 30 sorties and, at the typical wartime loss rate of around 3% per operation, a crew had only about a 40% chance of completing a full tour. Despite these odds, pilots repeatedly flew heavily laden bombers at night, in poor weather and under enemy fire.
