The Navigator was a vital member of RAF Bomber Command crews during the Second World War. His responsibility was to guide the aircraft along its planned route, reach the target at the correct time and then navigate the bomber safely back to base.

Working at a chart table, the Navigator continuously plotted the aircraft’s position, calculated courses, estimated wind speed and direction, and gave the pilot headings and timing corrections. Early in the war, much of this work relied on dead reckoning, supported where possible by visual and celestial fixes. Later, radio and radar aids such as Gee and H2S provided additional position information, although jamming, weather and limited range meant traditional navigation skills remained essential.

Navigation was also a crew effort, with the Navigator coordinating information from the pilot, bomb aimer, wireless operator and other crew members. Accurate navigation was critical to keeping the aircraft on route, reaching the target within the required time and returning safely after long operations over hostile territory.
