B-29 "Waddy's Wagon" (42-24598) from the 869th Bombardment Squadron, 497th Bombardment Group, was named after its pilot, Captain Walter "Waddy" Young. The aircraft was lost on January 9, 1945, during a mission to bomb the Nakajima Aircraft Factory near Tokyo. Intercepted by Japanese fighters, it was last seen near Choshi Point, Japan, and is believed to have ditched in the Pacific Ocean. All 11 crew members were declared Missing In Action and later presumed dead (MACR 10908). The crew is memorialized at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific.
