This design is inspired by the B-24 "Hell's Wench" that became famous for its role during World War II, particularly in the Ploesti raid—Operation Tidal Wave—on August 1, 1943. The bomber was piloted by Lieutenant Colonel Addison E. Baker, who was also the commander of the 93rd Bombardment Group.

"Hell's Wench" was part of a large, low-level bombing mission targeting the oil refineries in Ploesti, Romania, which were crucial to the German war effort. The operation was one of the most dangerous and daring air raids of the war. During the mission, "Hell's Wench" was hit by anti-aircraft fire and badly damaged. Despite the severe damage, Lt. Col. Baker continued to lead his formation toward the target, refusing to break away even as the aircraft became engulfed in flames.

Realizing that bailing out would risk the lives of his crew and disrupt the mission, Baker and his co-pilot, Major John L. Jerstad, stayed with the plane. They managed to drop their bombs before attempting to gain altitude so that his crew could escape by parachute, but despite his efforts, Hell's Wench crashed and exploded, killing Baker and the other nine airmen aboard.  Both Baker and Jerstad were posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor for their extraordinary bravery and leadership during the raid.

No known photo of the nose art of Hell’s Wench exists however this is our interpretation of what the nose art possibly looked like.

Many thanks for my wonderful sneakers!  I shall wear them with pride to remember my 25th mission with Bill DeSanders.
