Fightin' Sam was a B-24D Liberator (serial 42-40506) assigned to the 566th Bomb Squadron, 389th Bomb Group, 8th Air Force, operating from RAF Hethel, England. It featured distinctive nose art of a bruised but defiant Uncle Sam rolling up his sleeves—an image that became an unofficial symbol of the squadron.

In May 1944, the aircraft was transferred to the 801st Bomb Group (Provisional), also known as the “Carpetbaggers,” which carried out secret night missions over occupied Europe. For this role, Fightin' Sam was painted black to reduce visibility during nighttime operations.

The aircraft was later reassigned to the 859th Bomb Squadron in the Mediterranean Theater.
