AV-8B Harrier II Structured Twill Cap
The AV-8B Harrier II is a second-generation vertical/short takeoff and landing (V/STOL) attack aircraft developed by McDonnell Douglas (now Boeing) in partnership with British Aerospace. It first flew on November 1981, and entered U.S. Marine Corps service in 1985. Designed to replace the AV-8A, the Harrier II features a more powerful engine, composite materials, improved avionics, and greater payload capacity. Its ability to operate from short or improvised runways and amphibious assault ships made it ideal for expeditionary warfare. The aircraft saw combat in Desert Storm, Bosnia, Afghanistan, and Iraq, primarily in close air support roles. Over 337 Harrier IIs were built, including night attack and radar-equipped variants. The USMC plans to retire the Harrier by late 2027, gradually transitioning to the F-35B Lightning II, which offers STOVL capability with stealth and sensor fusion.
