The AH-1Z Viper is the U.S. Marine Corps’ premier attack helicopter, a modern evolution of the iconic AH-1 Cobra series. Developed as part of the H-1 upgrade program, the Viper—also known as the “Zulu Cobra”—is a twin-engine, tandem-seat gunship designed for precision strike, close air support, and armed escort missions in the most demanding environments.

Based on the AH-1W SuperCobra, the AH-1Z features major upgrades, including a four-blade composite rotor system (replacing the older two-blade design), improved survivability, upgraded avionics, and full digital glass cockpits. It is also equipped with the Target Sight System (TSS), giving the Viper high-performance day/night targeting and tracking capability, critical for modern close air support operations.

The AH-1Z carries a potent mix of weaponry, including a nose-mounted 20mm cannon, Hellfire and JAGM missiles, and Hydra 70 rockets. It is also interoperable with the UH-1Y Venom, sharing 85% of its parts—simplifying logistics and maintenance for Marine aviation units.

The Viper entered service with the USMC in the mid-2000s and was declared fully operational in 2011. It has since replaced the older AH-1W fleet and remains a core element of the Marines' rotary-wing firepower. Export versions have been delivered to allies such as Bahrain and the Czech Republic, further extending the Cobra legacy well into the 21st century.
