The AH-1Z Viper is the United States Marine Corps' primary attack helicopter and the latest evolution of the AH-1 Cobra family. Developed by Bell as part of the H-1 Upgrade Program, the Viper, also known as the "Zulu Cobra", is a twin-engine, tandem-seat gunship designed for precision strike, close air support, armed escort, and anti-armour missions in expeditionary environments.

Based on the AH-1W SuperCobra, the AH-1Z introduced major improvements, including a four-blade composite rotor system, upgraded driveline, improved survivability, fully integrated digital glass cockpits, and the Target Sight System (TSS), providing advanced day and night target detection, tracking, and laser designation. The aircraft is armed with a nose-mounted 20 mm M197 cannon and can carry AGM-114 Hellfire missiles, the newer AGM-179 Joint Air-to-Ground Missile (JAGM), Hydra 70 rockets, and AIM-9 Sidewinder air-to-air missiles. It also shares approximately 85% of its components with the UH-1Y Venom, greatly simplifying logistics, maintenance, and training.

The AH-1Z entered operational service with the United States Marine Corps in 2010 and achieved Full Operational Capability in 2011. It has since replaced the AH-1W SuperCobra as the Marine Corps' primary attack helicopter and continues to serve as a key element of Marine Air-Ground Task Force operations. The type has also been exported to Bahrain, the Czech Republic, and Nigeria, extending the Cobra family's operational service well into the 21st century.
