The A-6 Intruder was a carrier-based, all-weather attack aircraft operated by the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps from 1963 to 1997. Designed for precision bombing in any conditions, it featured a side-by-side two-man crew and cutting-edge radar and navigation systems. A total of 693 A-6s were built, including multiple upgraded variants like the A-6E, which added digital avionics and laser-guided weapon capabilities. In the Vietnam War, the A-6 proved invaluable, flying night and low-level strike missions against heavily defended targets. However, the aircraft paid a price - 84 A-6s were lost in combat, many to anti-aircraft fire and SAMs during dangerous deep-strike missions over North Vietnam. Despite its size and complexity, the Intruder earned a reputation for toughness, range, and heavy payload. Its role continued through conflicts like Lebanon and Desert Storm before its retirement. The A-6's legacy also lived on through the EA-6B Prowler, an electronic warfare derivative.
