This design is based on an A-10 "Warthog" as flown by Capt. Kim "KC" Campbell of the 75th FS.  On April 7th, 2003 Capt. Kim Campbell of the 75th Expeditionary Fighter Squadron flew a close air support mission over Baghdad in defence of U.S. troops. She flew A-10 Thunderbolt II serial 81-0987 which was assigned to the 74th Fighter Squadron Flying Tigers. The aircraft, call sign ‘Yard 06’, took heavy anti-aircraft artillery and surface to air fire during an attack run. The strike caused extensive structural damage, a complete loss of hydraulic systems and major degradation of the flight controls. One engine was damaged and the aircraft became difficult to manage.

Campbell shifted to manual reversion which uses mechanical linkages to move the stabilisers and rudders. This mode requires considerable physical effort and limits manoeuvring capability, yet she regained enough control to climb away from the threat area. Although she had the option to eject she chose to remain with the aircraft due to its altitude, the tactical situation on the ground and the need to continue supporting friendly forces. She flew the damaged A-10 back to base in southern Iraq and landed safely.

Inspection confirmed significant damage to the tail section, control surfaces and one engine. Campbell received the Distinguished Flying Cross for her actions and became one of the few A-10 pilots to land the aircraft in manual reversion after such extensive combat damage.

Many thanks for my wonderful sneakers!  I shall wear them with pride to remember my 25th mission with Bill DeSanders.
