The motto "Pilsung" used by the 51st Fighter Wing, known as the "Assam Draggins," is a Korean term that roughly translates to "Certain Victory" or "Sure Victory." It embodies the spirit of determination, strength, and perseverance, reflecting the wing's long history of combat effectiveness and its strong ties to the Korean Peninsula. The term "Pilsung" also connects to the wing's continued presence in South Korea, where they remain a key component of the United States' military defence posture in the region.

The name "Assam Draggins" comes from the 51st Fighter Group's operations during World War II, specifically in the China-Burma-India (CBI) Theatre. "Assam" refers to the northeastern region of India where the unit was based during its operations. Due to the terrain, the pilots would usually "drag in" on their passes. It was there that the 25th picked up the name Assam Draggins.

Post-World War II, the unit transitioned into flying jet aircraft, including the F-86 Sabre, during the Korean War and, later, during the Vietnam War, the F-4 Phantom. The unit is still active today, flying the A-10 Thunderbolt II, a close air support aircraft known for its durability and 30mm GAU-8 Avenger rotary cannon.
