This magpie design is inspired by the distinctive tail art carried by a commemorative F/A-18A Classic Hornet flown by No. 75 Squadron, Royal Australian Air Force. As the squadron prepared to retire the F/A-18A/B Hornet and transition to the F-35A Lightning II, aircraft A21-018 was painted in a striking black and white “Magpie” scheme to mark the end of the squadron’s Hornet era.

The artwork featured a large stylised magpie across the tail and rear fuselage, reflecting the bird used in No. 75 Squadron’s official badge. The magpie has long been associated with the unit and symbolises determination, territorial defence, and an aggressive fighter spirit, qualities that have characterised the squadron since its World War II service flying Curtiss P-40 Kittyhawks in the defence of Port Moresby in 1942.

This version reproduces the clean black and white magpie style seen on that commemorative aircraft, capturing the visual identity of the squadron’s final Classic Hornet period.
