No. 425 “Alouette” Squadron was formed at RAF Dishforth, Yorkshire, in June 1942 as the Royal Canadian Air Force’s first French-Canadian squadron. Its lark badge and motto, “Je te plumerai” (“I shall pluck you”), were inspired by a traditional French-Canadian song. During the Second World War, its crews flew Wellington and Halifax bombers, later converting to Lancasters after combat operations had ended.

Reformed at RCAF Station St-Hubert, Quebec, in 1954, the Alouettes initially flew the CF-100 Canuck. In October 1961, the squadron began operating the supersonic McDonnell CF-101 Voodoo at RCAF Station Namao, Alberta, where it trained crews for other Voodoo units. It relocated to RCAF Station Bagotville in July 1962, becoming operational that October.

As part of NORAD, 425 Squadron maintained two armed Voodoos on five-minute alert to intercept unidentified aircraft approaching Canadian airspace. Each interceptor carried a pilot and navigator, with crews prepared to respond to Soviet long-range bombers during the Cold War.

From 1965, its interceptors could carry the nuclear-armed AIR-2A Genie, with American personnel responsible for the warheads stored at Bagotville.

The squadron's Voodoo era ended in June 1984. It converted to the CF-18 Hornet and resumed NORAD alert duties in May 1985.
