No. 416 “Lynx” Squadron was authorised on Nov 22ⁿᵈ, 1941, and formed at RAF Peterhead, Scotland. Flying Supermarine Spitfires, it served over Britain and northwestern Europe during the Second World War. Its badge depicts a lynx leaping downwards before a maple leaf, while its motto, “Ad Saltum Paratus”, means “Ready for the Leap”.

Reformed at RCAF Station Uplands in January 1951, the squadron flew Mustangs before converting to Canadair Sabres and deploying to Grostenquin, France, in October 1952. In February 1957, it became an all-weather fighter unit at St-Hubert, Quebec, equipped with the CF-100 Canuck.

Reactivated at Bagotville in December 1961, 416 Squadron adopted the supersonic McDonnell CF-101 Voodoo and moved to Chatham, New Brunswick, in November 1962. Under NORAD, its two-seat interceptors defended eastern Canada and the United States’ eastern seaboard. They carried AIM-4 Falcon guided missiles and, between 1965 and 1975, had nuclear-armed AIR-2 Genie rockets stationed at Chatham. Voodoo operations continued until December 1984.

The Lynx returned as a CF-18 squadron in 1988 and contributed to the 1991 Gulf War. In July 2006, its aircraft and personnel joined 441 Squadron’s to form 409 Squadron; formal disbandment followed in December 2007.
