No. 414 “Black Knight” Squadron formed at RAF Croydon, England, in August 1941 as an RCAF army co-operation unit. After training on Lysanders and Tomahawks, it flew Mustangs and Spitfires on reconnaissance operations over occupied Europe. Its later-adopted badge depicts a black knight on a white horse, while its motto, “Totis Viribus”, means “With all our might”.

Reformed for photographic survey work in 1947, the squadron returned to fighter duties in 1952, flying Canadair Sabres in West Germany from 1953. In 1957, it reformed at RCAF Station North Bay, Ontario, flying CF-100 Canucks before converting to McDonnell CF-101 Voodoos in February 1962. It maintained all-weather interception duties under NORAD until disbanding in June 1964.

Reformed for electronic warfare in 1967, 414 moved back to North Bay in 1972. From December 1982 to March 1987, it flew the distinctive all-black “Electric Voodoo”, serial 101067, a specially modified aircraft unofficially designated EF-101B. Its radar-jamming equipment simulated enemy threats for interceptor crews and ground-based radar operators during air-defence exercises. A second aircraft, CF-101F 101006, supported pilot proficiency training.

Disbanded in 2002, 414 reformed in 2009, its electronic warfare officers flying aboard contractor-operated Dassault/Dornier Alpha Jets to support military training.
