No. 3 Squadron RAAF became closely associated with the unofficial “Lizards” identity during its years operating the Dassault Mirage IIIO from RAAF Base Butterworth between 1969 and 1986. The nickname emerged during the squadron’s Mirage era and was inspired by the aircraft’s green and brown camouflage scheme, tropical operating environment, and the squadron’s emphasis on low-level strike operations across Southeast Asia. Over time, the “Lizards” identity became deeply embedded within 3 Squadron culture, with the frill-neck lizard adopted as an unofficial emblem appearing on squadron artwork, patches, and social material.

No. 3 Squadron ceased Mirage operations in 1986 after nearly two decades of Mirage service at Butterworth and became the first operational RAAF squadron to convert to the F/A-18 Hornet. Even after the Mirage era ended, the “Lizards” identity remained strongly associated with the squadron and continues to form an important part of 3 Squadron heritage.
