The .50 BMG (12.7 × 99 mm) cartridge was widely used by American military aircraft during World War II, including the B-17 Flying Fortress, B-24 Liberator, P-51 Mustang and P-47 Thunderbolt.

The ammunition was fed into Browning .50 calibre machine guns using disintegrating metallic-link belts. Each cartridge held adjoining steel links together, forming a flexible belt that fed rounds into the weapon. As the gun operated, cartridges were withdrawn from their links before being chambered, allowing the individual links to separate and fall away.

Various ammunition types were employed, including armour-piercing, incendiary, armour-piercing incendiary and tracer rounds. These weapons formed an important part of American aircraft armament, providing defensive firepower for bombers and offensive firepower for fighter aircraft throughout the war.
