VA-75 “Sunday Punchers” transitioned to the A-6A Intruder in 1963, upgrading through A-6E/TRAM variants, and served until disestablishment on February 28, 1997. Their boxing-gloved cat mascot reflected tenacity and precision strike capability. VA-75 was the first A-6 fleet squadron to launch combat missions, debuting in Vietnam from USS Independence and pioneering radar-guided, all-weather attack profiles. The squadron saw Mediterranean deployments during the Libya tensions of the 1980s, participated in Cold War fleet maneuvers, and played a substantial role in Operation Desert Storm, executing complex night strikes and mine-laying missions. Its crews helped evolve A-6 tactics-including low-level navigation, electronic warfare, and multi-ship coordination - while operating KA-6D tankers to support fleet reach. VA-75 became the last US Navy Intruder squadron to deploy operational aircraft, flying A-6E and KA-6D models through 1996 with deactivation in 1997. Their experience informed training standards and next-generation air wing transitions. Squadron imagery from these years features A-6 variants aboard USS Enterprise, John F. Kennedy, and Eisenhower. The boxing cat emblem endures among naval aviators as a mark of tactical innovation, camaraderie, and persistent striking power.[1][2][3]
