The Union Jack was once prohibited from being flown by non-naval ships or individuals until 1915, when public pressure during World War I led to its unrestricted use as a patriotic symbol. The flag originated in 1606 after the union of the crowns of England and Scotland under King James I, combining the red cross of St. George (England) with the white saltire of St. Andrew (Scotland). The modern design emerged in 1801 after the addition of the red saltire of St. Patrick (Ireland) following the Act of Union. Today, it symbolises British unity and global heritage.
