The Tornado ADV, known in Royal Air Force service as the Tornado F.2 and later Tornado F.3, was a long-range supersonic interceptor developed from the Panavia Tornado strike aircraft during the Cold War. Built by the multinational Panavia Aircraft GmbH consortium, the ADV, Air Defence Variant, was designed primarily to defend British airspace against Soviet long-range bombers and cruise missile threats. Compared with the strike Tornado GR.1, the F.3 featured a lengthened fuselage, increased fuel capacity, the AI.24 Foxhunter radar, and improved endurance for long-range interception missions. The aircraft first flew in ADV prototype form on 27 Oct 1979, with the Tornado F.2 entering RAF squadron service in 1986.

Powered by two Turbo-Union RB199 turbofan engines, the Tornado F.3 was capable of speeds exceeding Mach 2 and carried Skyflash and later AIM-120 AMRAAM air-to-air missiles alongside an internal cannon. The aircraft served as one of the RAF’s principal air defence fighters throughout the late Cold War and post-Cold War period, replacing the English Electric Lightning and RAF Phantom interceptor force. Tornado F.3s saw operational service during the Gulf War, operations over Iraq and the Balkans, and homeland air defence duties. The type remained in RAF service until 2011, when it was replaced in the air defence role by the Eurofighter Typhoon.
