The T-6 Texan II is a modern turboprop trainer that continues the legacy of its namesake by preparing the next generation of military pilots for front-line service. Introduced in the early 2000s, the T-6 Texan II was developed from the Swiss Pilatus PC-9 and selected by the U.S. Air Force and U.S. Navy as a joint primary trainer under the JPATS (Joint Primary Aircraft Training System) program.

Equipped with a Pratt & Whitney PT6A turboprop engine, the T-6 offers jet-like handling, a fully digital glass cockpit, pressurised tandem seating, and ejection seats—making it a technologically advanced but cost-effective solution for initial pilot training. Its performance and avionics allow student pilots to build skills in instrument flying, aerobatics, formation flying, and low-level navigation before transitioning to more advanced trainers or operational aircraft like the F-16, F/A-18, or C-130.

Over 900 T-6s have been built for the U.S. military, and it has been exported to over a dozen allied nations, including Canada, Greece, Israel, Iraq, and Mexico. Some air forces also use the T-6 in light attack and armed reconnaissance roles, particularly the AT-6 Wolverine variant, which adds weapons capability for counter-insurgency missions.
