The T-2 Buckeye is a carrier-capable jet trainer developed for the U.S. Navy to provide intermediate and advanced flight training. Entering service in 1959 under the original designation T2J-1, it was redesignated T-2A in 1962. For decades, the Buckeye helped prepare Navy and Marine Corps Student Naval Aviators for jet aircraft operations, providing instruction in formation flying, instrument flying, weapons delivery and aircraft carrier operations.
Designed around proven technology, the Buckeye features straight wings derived from the FJ-1 Fury, tandem seating for a student and instructor, an arrestor hook and underwing mounting points for weapons training. Carrier launches used a catapult bridle rather than the nose-mounted launch bar found on later naval aircraft. The original T-2A was powered by a single Westinghouse J34 turbojet, while the T-2B introduced two Pratt & Whitney J60 engines. The subsequent T-2C used two General Electric J85-GE-4 turbojets and became the principal later-production version for the U.S. Navy.
Export versions included the T-2D for Venezuela and the T-2E for Greece. In U.S. service, the Buckeye also supported Naval Flight Officer training, extending its contribution beyond pilot instruction. Its final carrier qualifications took place in 2003, and it was withdrawn from the Naval Air Training Command in 2008 as the T-45 Goshawk replaced it. Over almost five decades of training service, the Buckeye helped generations of naval aviators make the transition to jet-powered fleet aircraft.
