The Supermarine Spitfire was a British single-seat fighter aircraft and one of the most iconic and successful combat aircraft of the Second World War. Designed by R.J. Mitchell, it combined advanced aerodynamics with Rolls-Royce Merlin and later Griffon engines, offering superb agility, speed, and high-altitude performance. First flown on 5 March 1936 and entering RAF service in 1938, the Spitfire played a crucial role in the Battle of Britain, where it became a symbol of British resistance. It was continuously upgraded throughout the war, with more than 20 major variants—including the Mk I, V, IX, XIV, and 24—serving in air superiority, photo reconnaissance, fighter-bomber, and escort roles across Europe, the Mediterranean, Africa, and the Pacific.

Over the course of the war, the Spitfire was credited with approximately 5,988 enemy aircraft shot down in RAF service alone. Its overall kill-to-loss ratio was about 1.7:1, though this varied by theatre and period. In the Battle of Britain, Spitfires were responsible for about 42% of all RAF air-to-air victories, despite being outnumbered by Hurricanes. Spitfires were flown not only by the RAF but also by Commonwealth and Allied air forces, and post-war they remained in service with several nations into the 1950s. With over 20,300 aircraft built by the end of production in 1948, the Spitfire remains one of the most admired and enduring fighter aircraft in aviation history.
