The Sea Harrier was a British carrier-based fighter and strike aircraft operated by the Royal Navy from 1980 until 2006. Developed by British Aerospace from the RAF Harrier jump jet, the Sea Harrier was designed for fleet air defence, reconnaissance, and strike missions from small aircraft carriers. Powered by a single Rolls-Royce Pegasus vectored-thrust turbofan engine, the aircraft was capable of short take-off and vertical landing operations, allowing it to operate from carriers such as HMS Invincible, HMS Hermes, and HMS Ark Royal without catapults or arrestor wires. The Sea Harrier entered Royal Navy service in 1980 with the FRS.1 variant, while the later FA.2 introduced improved radar and beyond-visual-range missile capability.

The Sea Harrier became best known for its performance during the Falklands War, where Royal Navy Sea Harriers provided fleet air defence and air superiority for the British task force operating in the South Atlantic. Armed with AIM-9L Sidewinder missiles and supported by effective radar control and pilot training, Sea Harriers achieved 20 confirmed air-to-air victories during the conflict without being lost in air-to-air combat. The aircraft later served in operations over Bosnia, Iraq, and the Balkans before retiring from Royal Navy service in 2006.
