The P-3 Orion is a long-range maritime patrol aircraft known for its anti-submarine warfare, reconnaissance and surveillance capabilities. It entered U.S. Navy service in 1962, and more than 750 aircraft were built for service with the United States and numerous other nations.
Throughout its service, the Orion operated from bases including Naval Air Station Jacksonville, Florida, and Naval Air Station Whidbey Island, Washington. Naval Air Station Patuxent River, Maryland, also supported P-3 flight testing and development.
The P-3 played an important role in Cold War submarine tracking, counter-piracy operations and intelligence gathering, including missions during the Gulf War and subsequent operations in Iraq and Afghanistan. Its four turboprop engines, long endurance and evolving sensor systems made it a mainstay of maritime patrol aviation for decades. Although replaced by the P-8 Poseidon with a number of operators, the Orion continues to serve in maritime patrol, surveillance and other specialist roles internationally.
