The MQ-9 Reaper, also known as Predator B, is a medium-altitude, long-endurance remotely piloted aircraft used for intelligence collection, surveillance, reconnaissance and precision strike. Developed by General Atomics Aeronautical Systems as a larger and more powerful follow-on to the MQ-1 Predator, the Predator B first flew on Feb 2ⁿᵈ, 2001, and the MQ-9 reached U.S. Air Force initial operational capability in Oct 2007.

Powered by a Honeywell TPE331-10GD turboprop engine, the Reaper can remain airborne for more than 27 hours, operate up to 50,000 ft and reach speeds of around 240 knots. It has a total payload capacity of about 3,750 to 3,850 lb, including up to 3,000 lb of external stores across six wing hardpoints.

The MQ-9 can carry sensors and weapons, including the MTS-B electro-optical and infrared targeting system, synthetic aperture radar, AGM-114 Hellfire missiles, GBU-12 Paveway II laser-guided bombs, GBU-38 JDAMs, GBU-49 Enhanced Paveway II and GBU-54 Laser JDAMs. This mix of sensors, endurance and precision weapons allows it to monitor targets for long periods, support ground forces and strike time-sensitive targets when required.

The Reaper began operational missions in Afghanistan in 2007 and flew its first combat mission over Iraq in July 2008. It has since been used across U.S. and coalition operations for ISR, close air support, convoy and raid overwatch, target development, precision strike and combat search and rescue support.

Although uncrewed, the MQ-9 is not autonomous in the usual combat role. It is flown by a remote crew, normally a pilot and sensor operator, using a ground control station. Takeoff and landing can be handled near the operating location, while the rest of the mission can be flown through satellite links by crews based elsewhere.

The MQ-9 has been operated by the U.S. Air Force and several partner air forces. Confirmed users include the United States, the United Kingdom, France, Italy, Spain and the Netherlands, although the Royal Air Force retired its MQ-9A Reaper fleet in Oct 2025 as it moved to the newer Protector system.

Why are the stripes vertical?
Great question - and you're absolutely right that the U.S. flag is usually displayed with horizontal stripes. But in this design, we’ve reimagined the flag as an artistic tribute rather than a literal representation. We chose to depict the flag as if it were hanging vertically from above, similar to how it might appear draped at a hangar entrance or suspended during a ceremony. This vertical orientation allows the iconic silhouette of the aircraft to really shine -with the red and white stripes running the length of the fuselage, it creates a bold, centred look while still honouring the flag’s spirit and symbolism.
