The MH-47 is a specialised special operations variant of the Boeing CH-47 Chinook, developed for long-range, low-level, and all-weather missions in support of elite units. Operated by U.S. Army Special Operations Aviation, the MH-47 is equipped with aerial refuelling capability, advanced terrain-following radar, and sophisticated navigation systems, allowing it to penetrate deep into hostile territory, often at night and in challenging conditions.

The CH-47 Chinook itself is one of the most recognisable and widely used heavy-lift helicopters in the world. First flown in 1961 and introduced during the Vietnam War, it was designed for medium-to-heavy transport, capable of carrying troops, artillery, vehicles, and supplies into areas inaccessible to fixed-wing aircraft. Its distinctive tandem-rotor design eliminates the need for a tail rotor, allowing greater lift, stability, and efficiency in demanding environments.

The original CH-47A entered U.S. Army service in 1962, quickly proving its value in Vietnam for troop movement, artillery emplacement, and recovery missions. Improved variants followed, including the CH-47B and CH-47C, with increased power and payload capacity. The CH-47D, introduced in the late 1970s, brought upgraded engines, composite rotor blades, and improved avionics, becoming the backbone of U.S. Army heavy-lift operations for decades.

The modern CH-47F features advanced digital avionics, upgraded airframes, and improved survivability systems. It remains in frontline service globally, used by the U.S. Army and numerous allied nations for combat, logistics, disaster relief, and humanitarian missions.

Capable of lifting over 20,000 pounds externally and transporting up to 55 troops, the Chinook family has proven exceptionally versatile. It has served in every major U.S. conflict since Vietnam, from Iraq and Afghanistan to global peacekeeping and disaster response operations.

With more than 1,200 built and continuous upgrades keeping it operational into the 2060s, the CH-47 remains a cornerstone of modern military aviation. Its speed, lift capacity, and reliability ensure it continues to deliver critical capability wherever it is needed.
