The Avro Lancaster was a British four-engine heavy bomber developed by Avro for the Royal Air Force during the Second World War. Designed by Roy Chadwick and developed from the unsuccessful twin-engine Avro Manchester, the Lancaster first flew on 9 Jan 1941 and entered RAF squadron service in 1942. Powered by four Rolls-Royce Merlin engines on most variants, it combined a large bomb load, long range, and strong operational performance, becoming the principal RAF heavy bomber during the later years of the war. A total of 7,377 Lancasters were built in Britain and Canada.

The Lancaster became closely associated with RAF Bomber Command’s strategic bombing campaign against Germany, flying approximately 156,000 operational sorties and dropping more than 600,000 tons of bombs. It was adapted to carry specialised weapons including the 12,000 lb Tallboy and 22,000 lb Grand Slam, and achieved lasting fame through No. 617 Squadron’s Dambusters raid in May 1943. Lancasters served with RAF, Royal Canadian Air Force, and other Commonwealth squadrons, while later aircraft also undertook reconnaissance, maritime, rescue, and specialised support duties. Only two Lancasters remain airworthy today, preserving the type’s connection with Bomber Command and the Commonwealth aircrews who served in it.
