The F-35A Lightning II is the RAAF’s premier fifth-generation multirole stealth fighter, operated by No. 75 Squadron at RAAF Base Tindal, Northern Territory. Officially entering Australian service in 2018, the F-35A replaced the Classic Hornet fleet and now serves as the RAAF’s primary air combat platform. With stealth shaping, advanced sensors, and sensor fusion technology, the Lightning II provides unmatched situational awareness, air-to-air lethality, and precision strike capability. It is capable of networked operations across land, air, and sea domains.
No. 75 Squadron achieved initial operational capability (IOC) with the F-35A in December 2020, and regularly participates in advanced multinational exercises like Pitch Black, Talisman Sabre, and Red Flag. The squadron plays a leading role in projecting Australian air power across the Indo-Pacific. With ongoing deliveries and upgrades, the RAAF will field 72 F-35As across multiple squadrons, ensuring Australia maintains a potent, survivable, and future-ready air combat capability.
