The English Electric Canberra PR.9 was a specialised photo-reconnaissance variant of the Canberra developed for the Royal Air Force during the Cold War. Built by Short Brothers, the PR.9 prototype first flew on 8 Jul 1955, and the type entered RAF squadron service with No. 58 Squadron at RAF Wyton in Jan 1960. Based on the Canberra B(I).8, the PR.9 featured a long-span wing, more powerful Rolls-Royce Avon engines, elongated nacelles, and a distinctive offset fighter-style canopy. It was designed for high-altitude, long-range photographic reconnaissance at a time when Britain required rapid strategic intelligence gathering.

The Canberra PR.9 became one of the RAF’s longest-serving jet aircraft, remaining in operational use for more than four decades. It later served with No. 39 Squadron, carrying out strategic reconnaissance, photographic mapping, and survey work. PR.9s saw operational use during the Cold War and later over the Balkans, Iraq, and Afghanistan, while a proposed Falklands-related deployment via Chile was abandoned before operations began. Valued for its high-altitude performance, range, and specialist camera fit, the PR.9 remained useful long after the original Canberra bomber had left frontline service. The final RAF Canberra PR.9 aircraft retired in 2006, ending more than 55 years of Canberra service with the RAF.
