At the outbreak of the Second World War, the Battle formed a major part of the RAF’s light bomber force in France with the Advanced Air Striking Force. However, its relatively low speed, limited defensive armament, and lack of adequate protection against modern fighter attack made it highly vulnerable to German fighters and anti-aircraft fire. This became evident during the Battle of France in 1940, where heavy losses forced its withdrawal from frontline daylight bombing operations.
Despite its combat shortcomings, the Battle was heavily used as a trainer, target tug, and support aircraft throughout the war, including under the British Commonwealth Air Training Plan. Sources differ slightly on total production, with approximately 2,200 aircraft built. The type continued in secondary RAF service after the war before being phased out during the late 1940s. Although overshadowed by later aircraft, the Fairey Battle remains an important transitional type between RAF biplane bombers and modern monoplane bombers.
