The Avro Anson was a British twin-engine, multi-role aircraft introduced in the 1930s. Originally developed from the civilian Avro 652 airliner, it first flew on 24 March 1935 and entered RAF service in 1936. It was the RAF’s first monoplane with a retractable undercarriage. Powered by two Armstrong Siddeley Cheetah radial engines, the Anson was used in roles such as coastal reconnaissance, training, light transport, and communications.

During the early stages of WWII, Ansons were used for maritime patrols and convoy escort but were soon reassigned to training duties due to limited range and speed. Under the British Commonwealth Air Training Plan, Ansons became essential in training navigators, bomb aimers, wireless operators, and gunners. It was affectionately nicknamed “Faithful Annie” for its reliability.

More than 11,000 Ansons were built in the UK, Canada, and Australia. It remained in RAF service until 1968, making it one of the longest-serving aircraft in British military history. Variants included Mk I to Mk XIX, each adapted for various roles. Post-war, many were sold into civil service as cargo planes or passenger transports.
