Air America was a CIA-owned airline (1950–1976) that supported covert U.S. operations in Southeast Asia. Operating from key hubs like Udorn, Chiang Mai, Vientiane, Long Tieng, Danang, and Saigon, it flew supply, medevac, extraction, and reconnaissance missions across Laos, Vietnam, Cambodia, and Thailand. The fleet included C-46s, C-123s, Pilatus Porters, and UH-1 Hueys. Though officially a civilian airline, it played a paramilitary role in the “Secret War” in Laos and the Vietnam War, often flying in hostile or politically sensitive areas. Air America was vital in supporting Hmong allies, rescuing downed aircrews, and enabling CIA-led operations across the region.
