Supermarine Spitfire Mk Vb (R6923, coded QJ-S) of No. 92 (East India) Squadron RAF, photographed at Biggin Hill, Kent, on 19 May 1941. It was flown at the time by 21-year-old Acting Flight Lieutenant Allan Richard Wright, a decorated fighter pilot awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross (DFC) on 22 October 1940, and a Bar to his DFC by July 1941.

Originally built as a Mk I, R6923 was later upgraded to a Mk V after service with No. 19 Squadron and No. 7 Operational Training Unit in 1940. On 21 June 1941, the aircraft was flown by Sergeant G. W. Aston on a bomber escort mission over France. During the sortie, Aston shot down a Messerschmitt Bf 109 but was himself hit and forced to ditch the Spitfire in the sea. He survived and returned to duty later that evening.
