Powered by four Rolls-Royce Merlin engines on most variants, it combined a large bomb load, long range, and strong operational performance, becoming the principal RAF heavy bomber during the later years of the war. It was adapted to carry specialised weapons including the 12,000 lb Tallboy and 22,000 lb Grand Slam, and achieved lasting fame through No. 617 Squadron’s Dambusters raid in May 1943. Lancasters served with RAF, Royal Canadian Air Force, and other Commonwealth squadrons, while later aircraft also undertook reconnaissance, maritime, rescue, and specialised support duties.
