Did You Know?
This design is based on Halifax “LK-E”, E for Excalibur, (serial LK797) that was lost March 31, 1944 and for which the aircraft's pilot, Pilot Officer Cyril Joe Barton, was awarded the Victoria Cross. This was the only action involving a Halifax bomber for which a Victoria Cross was received.

Whilst still 70 miles from the target, the aircraft was attacked by two enemy fighters. Two fuel tanks punctured, both the radio and rear turret disabled, the starboard inner engine was on fire and the intercom lines were cut. Following the first attack, the navigator, bomb aimer and wireless operator bailed out however, Barton decided to press on to the target and drop his bombs.

After releasing his bombs, Barton nursed his heavily damaged aircraft home for the 4 ½ journey using the Pole Star and his flight map for navigation. After crossing the English coast ninety miles north of Burn, and now low on fuel he ordered the three remaining crew to crash positions behind the main spar. Soon after three engines cut out and Barton attempted the forced landing. He made a gallant attempt to put down clear of the houses over which he was flying, and the aircraft ploughed through several gardens and greenhouses. The rear fuselage broke off and landed in a deep railway cutting with the three crewmen inside who survived. Barton was recovered alive from the wreckage however died of his injuries before reaching hospital. As a result of his selfless actions, on 27th June 1944, Cyril Barton was posthumously awarded the Victoria Cross. He was 22 years old.
