Fitted with external litters mounted beside the fuselage, H-13s rapidly carried wounded soldiers from the battlefield to Mobile Army Surgical Hospital units, becoming strongly associated with the “MASH” evacuation role. The type also served in observation and artillery spotting roles in Korea before continuing in U.S. military service into the early Vietnam War period.
