Derived from the Vertol Model 107, which first flew on 22 Apr 1958, the military CH-46A made its first flight in Aug 1962 and entered Marine Corps service in 1964. Powered by two General Electric T58 turboshaft engines, the Sea Knight was designed to transport troops, cargo and casualties in support of amphibious and expeditionary operations. Its tandem-rotor configuration provided strong lifting capability without a tail rotor, making it particularly suited to operations from ships and confined landing zones.

The CH-46 became one of the most recognisable helicopters of the Vietnam War, serving extensively with the Marine Corps in combat assault, troop transport, medical evacuation, resupply and recovery missions. It later supported operations in Grenada, Lebanon, the Gulf War, Somalia and Iraq, remaining the Marine Corps’ principal medium-lift assault helicopter for more than four decades. Approximately 524 H-46 aircraft were built across the family, including versions operated by the U.S. Marine Corps and U.S. Navy. Related aircraft also served with Canada as the CH-113 Labrador and Voyageur, with Sweden as the HKP 4, and with Japan as licence-built Kawasaki-Vertol KV-107 variants. The Marine Corps retired the Sea Knight in Aug 2015 after more than 50 years of service, replacing it with the Bell Boeing MV-22 Osprey.
