Did You Know?
Delivered under Lend-Lease terms to the RAF during the Summer of ’42, the American-built Martin B-26A Marauder Mk. I, FK375, “Dominion Revenge,” was operated by No. 14 Squadron from bases in Egypt on long – and often solitary – maritime reconnaissance, sea-mining, and anti-shipping operations over the Mediterranean, Aegean, and Adriatic Seas. Like most RAF units of that time, the aircrew of No. 14 Squadron hailed from Britain and all its self-governing Dominions – New Zealand, Canada, South Africa, and Australia – as well as from Kenya and Rhodesia, making it truly a “Dominion” squadron. Usually flown by the Squadron’s CO, Wing Commander W.S.G. “Dick” Maydwell, “Dominion Revenge” was lost during a torpedo attack off the Greek island of Aghios Giorgios on 3 January 1943 with Captain B.W. Young, SAAF, at its controls.
