Though based on the F-8 Crusader, the A-7 was shorter and bulkier - hence its unflattering but affectionate nickname. It was one of the first tactical aircraft equipped with a head-up display (HUD), inertial navigation, and a datalink system, giving it excellent accuracy for its time. The A-7 excelled in close air support and strike missions, serving extensively in the Vietnam War and later in Grenada, Lebanon, Panama, and Desert Storm. Over 1,500 A-7s were produced for the U.S. Navy, Air Force, and allied nations. The Navy retired the Corsair II in 1991, replaced by the F/A-18 Hornet, while Air National Guard units continued flying it until 1993.
