Did you know?
The North American T-6 Texan first flew in 1935 and was developed as a advanced single engine trainer used by several air forces around the world with almost 15,500 aircraft built. Whilst known for being primarily used as a trainer, there have been occasions where the aircraft was deployed in combat roles. The first instance of this was during the 1948 Arab-Israeli War where 20 AT-6 Texans were deployed with the 1st and 2nd fighter squadrons of the Syrian Air Force providing ground support for Syrian troops, and launching air strikes. They also engaged in air-to-air combat on a number of occasions, with a rear gunner shooting down an Israeli Avia S-199 fighter. It was also used in a light attack or counter insurgency role by France during the Algerian War. During the Korean War and, to a lesser extent, the Vietnam War, the USAF used T-6s as forward air control aircraft known as T-6 "Mosquitos". The last T-6s in active service were with the South Africa Air Force as late as 1995.
